Hi Claire, Just to let you know A enjoyed the lesson and tells me she is getting a lot out of it. Yippee!’
At The English Lab, I specialise in giving AQA students absolute confidence in how to target the AQA GCSE English (and English Literature) exam papers. Led by a highly experienced tutor and UK award-winning teacher, Claire Davidson, the programmes blend proven teaching strategies, expert resources, and a student-first approach to make progress inevitable.
We believe great GCSE English tuition starts with clarity. That’s why our approach combines:
I am a UK Teaching Award winner and National Judge with thirty years experience teaching students aged 11-18. I am also an experienced examiner, having worked for many years as a Team Leader for a variety of exam boards. Whilst I have taught all abilities, my most recent position in a boys grammar school has given me a particular insight into the need for high end intensive intervention to raise exam performance in the run up to the GCSE English examinations.
I am considered an approachable and friendly tutor who creates an excellent working environment where all students feel confident to participate freely and share their ideas. I work hard to engender an atmosphere of mutual respect and support, where everyone contributes and feels safe and comfortable to do so.

Hi Claire, Just to let you know A enjoyed the lesson and tells me she is getting a lot out of it. Yippee!’

You’re a superstar teacher! S got a Year 10 mock paper back today. He was really pleased. Just shy of a grade 7!

I would thoroughly recommend Claire as a tutor. Claire was a conscientious and thoughtful tutor who went the extra mile to make sure that my son was prepared for his English GCSE’s. He wouldn’t have achieved the grade he did without her support and knowledge.
“Professional, experienced, friendly, knowledgeable, supportive, brilliant! English has always been a struggle for my son, who got a low level 3 in the summer so started tutoring with Claire ahead of November resits. Her knowledge of the exam process, student learning and the English syllabus is amazing. She was able to encourage and support my son, who made terrific progress in a short time. He came out of the summer exam shrugged his shoulders and made a grunt. He came out of the November exam saying he has never written so much in an English exam, (and knew how to approach each question correctly.) He was smiling, actually smiling after an English exam! Claire and my son worked together to find the areas he needed to focus on and then worked intensively through the process. He regularly submitted work, which Claire thoroughly and accurately marked, using her many years of experience. This bespoke approach motivated him and gave him confidence. I cannot speak highly enough of Claire, her knowledge and approach has given my son the best chance possible.” Update: ‘W received his November resit results and achieved the Grade 4 he needs to finally pursue the course of his choice. He did this within 2.5 months. I am so relieved and delighted.’ (N.H.)
‘Having got a 4 for Lang and 3 for Lit in his mocks, B needed a 5 in Lang for college and after your lessons, he was hopeful. What we weren’t expecting was an 8 in Lang and not only that, but a 6 in Lit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had to sit down and stop myself from bawling my eyes out. He is not a fan of English and I did wonder how much he was taking in, but you must be one b****y amazing teacher Claire. I knew you were, but now I’ve seen it for real. That’s a 4 grade jump in Lang and 3 grade jump in Lit and he was predicted 6/6. He got the grades he needed for college (and the school if he’d wanted) which is a massive relief and it turns out that his highest grade was Eng Lang! Thank you so much for the lessons and of course, you’ll be getting my recommendation. I could still cry and you’re owed a massive hug.’
“Having had the honour of being taught by Claire and to have then later known her as a colleague I can absolutely vouch for her dedication to excellence and passion for the success of students in her care.”
‘I wasn’t an amazingly academic student. Frequently, I was the class clown and the one to make a cheeky comment. This was of course all bravado and in reality, a cover up for a 16 year old with little confidence and belief in herself. I had a passion for English and occasionally some good ideas which were reflected in my work. Claire, Mrs Davidson saw through to the real me and coaxed me to put some effort in and see how I did. Eventually I softened my stubbornness and did what she advised. She was there every step of the way, constantly marking my work, to give me an idea on how I was getting on. She was on hand for everything and no idea was bad in her eyes. She truly believes in her students and does everything she can, professionally and personally to get results, but also provides fantastic support in the process, making you believe in yourself. I was terrified to do my speaking and listening exam and was sure I was going to fail. Claire listened to my endless moans and whinging (give the woman a medal- patience of a saint!!) and she just urged me to give it my all and to believe in what I was saying. You best believe it, I nearly fell off of my chair when she delivered the news that little old me had the highest speaking and listening grade out of our top set class! I went from an E Grade in my mocks, to getting 2 As in English Language & English Literature. If you are looking for anyone to help you with your English, Claire is the lady for you.’
Claire is a welcoming, fantastic and engaging tutor who makes lessons fun and encouraging. Her content and revision resources are wonderful and really help Z after the lesson has finished. My son has vastly improved his confidence and approach to both English Language and Literature exams. I would highly recommend Claire. Thank you so much from the whole family!

‘Happy to report M got Grade 7s. And to be honest, the only study she did was with your group… So, thank you!!! I shall be recommending your services!’ KW ‘I’m very happy…Without the extra support it’s very unlikely he would have passed his English!’ EG ‘I just wanted to let you know that I PASSED!!!!! I got an amazing and very unexpected Grade 5. Thank youuuuuuu!’ MR ‘F got a 9 in English Lang & an 8 in English Lit. Amazing. Can’t thank you enough! Lots of thanks.’ SB ‘I got two Grade 8s in Language and Literature. One mark off a Grade 9 in Literature’ TR ‘E has attained the grades he needs to proceed with an apprenticeship in Engineering. We are delighted. The tutor sessions were fab.’ KQ ‘A double Grade 5 in Lang & Lit and only 2 marks off a 6 in Lang and one off a 6 in Lit. I cannot thank you enough. I’m in tears here. We didn’t think he was going to pass at all. I am over the moon.’ SG ‘O got 7s in both Lit & Lang!!! Absolutely delighted. Thank you so much for the support. He did so much better than we thought.’ CC ‘He gained a 7 in English Language & a 6 in Literature. We are delighted…’ SB ‘She got a double Grade 7 in Lang & Lit, which we are all delighted with. Thanks for your expert tutoring and encouragement all the way.’ CM
Hi Claire, Sam got his interim school report this week and achieved an ‘outstanding’ in English right across the board for all areas of his work. You are an amazing teacher, Claire. This is an absolute first for Sam in English. He’s improved and more motivated with you involved!
“Claire tutored both my children through KS4 resulting in them achieving their English GCSE. Both my sons struggled with English, however without the relevant grade would be unable to proceed to A levels. Claire lifted both of their abilities and ensured they both exceeded the required grade to further their education. I will always be extremely grateful for the time, skill and patience she gave my sons and would highly recommend Claire”

Claire really got to know my son and understood his strengths and weaknesses. She treated him like an adult and gave him a real confidence to go above and beyond what he thought himself capable of, especially given his dyslexia. Not only did he get two 7s in English, but the skills and critical thinking that Claire helped him develop enabled him to do well in all his other subjects too. We would absolutely recommend Claire. If you are looking for someone to truly support your young person then she is it !
